چکیده

We study the integrated logistics network design and inventory stocking problem as characterized by the interdependency of the design and stocking decisions in service parts logistics. These two sets of decisions have been usually considered sequentially in practice, and the associated problems have been tackled separately in the research literature. The overall problem is typically further complicated due to time-based service constraints that provide lower limits for the percentages of demand satisfied within specified time windows. We introduce an optimization model that explicitly captures the interdependency between network design (location of facilities, and allocation of demands to facilities) and inventory stocking decisions (stock levels and their corresponding stochastic fill rates), and present computational results from our extensive experiments that investigate the effects of several factors including demand levels, time-based service levels, and costs. We show that the integrated approach can provide significant cost savings over the decoupled approach (solving the network design first and inventory stocking next), shifting the whole efficient frontier curve between cost and service level to superior regions. We also show that the decoupled and integrated approaches may generate totally different solutions, even in the number of located facilities and in their locations, magnifying the importance of considering inventory as part of the network design models. ∗This research is supported in part by NSF CAREER Grant 0245123. †Corresponding author: [email protected]

Linear integrated location-inventory models for service parts logistics network design

We present two integrated network design and inventory control problems in service-parts logistics systems. Such models are complicated due to demand uncertainty and highly nonlinear time-based service level constraints. Exploiting unique properties of the nonlinear constraints, we provide an equivalent linear formulation under part-warehouse service requirements, and an approximate linear form...

Logic-based Benders decomposition for an inventory-location problem with service constraints ¬リニ

We study an integrated inventory-location problem with service requirements faced by an aerospace company in designing its service parts logistics network. Customer demand is Poisson distributed and the service levels are time-based leading to highly non-linear, stochastic service constraints and a nonlinear, mixed-integer optimization problem. Unlike previous work in the literature, which prop...

Developing the Inventory Routing Problem with Backhauls, Heterogeneous Fleet and Split Service

One of the most important points in a supply chain is customer-driven modeling, which reduces the bullwhip effect in the supply chain, as well as the costs of investment on the inventory and efficient transshipment of the products. Their homogeneity is reflected in the Inventory Routing Problem, which is a combination of distribution and inventory management. This paper expands the classical In...
